William Given 126 Chaparral Road Carmel Valley, Ca. 93924 After graduation I enlisted with the US Navy and served a term of three years and three months. This experience was an "eye opener" for this reserved kid from Pennsylvania, who had never been away from home before. With an honorable discharge in the communications system, I returned home and began my life as a civilian. Over the course of the next 15 years, I worked as an inventory control clerk and a draftsman. During that time I bought property and later had a house built in the Pocono mountains in a wonderful community of Hemlock Farms. I had intentions of living there permanently, but after eight years of ownership, I became frustrated of not finding suitable employment ... thus I decided to sell and move on to greener pastures" as it were. I moved to Englewood, Florida (gulf coast) and began working for a printing firm in Venice just north of Englewood) in the art department. I was there for a year and a half, and although I liked my job, I was constantly coping and struggling with the weather conditions, the poisonous plants and bugs! During this time I was also thinking of California and the ocean side community of Carmel. Thus my "wandering lust" took over and I decided to head west. I had never visited California, didn't know a soul had no job lined up and didn't know where I was to stay. BUT, through all of this, in my heart of hearts I knew that whatever I was to experience, all would be just fine. And as it has turned out, that's exactly how it is! I had found a wonderful "guest house" in Carmel Woods and my landlady became my "Mentor". The bottom line is that she directed me in the direction of commercial art, and thus I began a free-lance illustrating career that has sustained me in a lifestyle that in my wildest dreams I couldn't have imagined. Thus making the move across country has been the best decision in my life. I've illustrated both men's and women's fashion for catalogs, mailers, newspapers, magazines and special events. I've also been involved in erotic drawing and abstract watercolor painting over the course of the last 27 years. It was just last year that I decided to withdraw from all the "deadlines" and dealing with publishers, and to spend the bulk of my time working around the house and garden and enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer. I'm so very fortunate and thankful to be able to live in such a beautiful area, and to say "I've done it my way"... of course with the help of others! |
