As you may remember, I was not a stellar student at CB - Cs were better than Ds in my book! In spite of my "awkward academic record," somehow I talked La Salle College into giving me a scholarship (diving) and parlayed that into a series of assistantships and fellowships that ultimately resulted in degrees at La Salle, Ohio University and Indiana University. Yep it took nine years after we left CB before I had enough education to get a job! Isn't America wonderful?
Jeanne and I and our rapidly expanding family ended up at Notre Dame in the summer of 1965, where I stayed for the whole of my academic life of nearly 45 years. Along the way I taught more than 10% of ND's living alumni and earned some teaching awards that I am very proud of, wrote a bunch of books and professional articles that a few but not many non-family members actually read, chaired more committees than I care to remember, and conned my way into ND's international studies group which took me to the other side of the world and to London where I ran academic programs for many years. It was a great way to earn a living.

Jeanne Jourdan and I married in 1961, divorced in 1985, and remarried in 1992. (The divorce thing was not the swiftest move we ever made.) We have five marvelous daughters, one living in Houston and four of living in Madison - go figure. At the moment we have seven grandchildren aged 24 (ND '08) to 4, and an eighth grandchild expected in February 2010. As is the case for those living on Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon, all of our children and grandchildren are beautiful, intellectually and athletically gifted, and delightful.

When Jeanne retired from the Indiana Bench we moved to a small lake about 25 miles north of South Bend. Jeanne continues to teach trial skills course at ND and for NITA; but her true love is gardening, reading, and volunteering to work with woman in our County Jail, CASA, and the local Democratic Party. I pretend to golf (I am terrible at it but enjoy the walk), raise money for Southwestern Michigan College, work with our County Plan Commission, cook and entertain, take long walks with our Golden Retriever and Black Lab, and challenge our friends and neighbors who in spite of the Bush year's remain Republican.

Come on out and play with us!
